Article by Professor of Sociology Przemysław Pluciński
This article analyzes the “growth ideology” – the dominant belief that continuous economic growth is a prerequisite for prosperity and social progress. The author demonstrates how the concept of growth has become a mantra repeated by politicians and a fetish of the media – regardless of its actual costs. “Grease or Sand? The Controversy Over Public Debt”
By Krzysztof Nowak, Jagiellonian University
This piece presents public debt as one of the most crucial and contested issues in contemporary economics. It stirs debate both within academic circles and in public discourse. The author compares two contrasting perspectives on public debt. The first – the so-called neoclassical view – assumes that debt slows down the economy, acting like sand in the gears of a machine. The second – inspired by Keynesian theory – argues that in difficult times, debt can actually support the economy, working like grease that keeps it running smoothly.
